Finding My Roots: Overcoming Obstacles in Floristry
Once I discovered my passion for floristry, I took it day by day—starting my traineeship, immersing myself in the intricacies of flower varieties and their care, funding my studies, gaining work experience, and honing my skills. Each step I took brought me closer to my ultimate goal: starting my own business.
However, one of the hardest challenges I faced when launching my business was the sudden scarcity of flowers. After working full-time at a bustling florist in the city, where creativity was always at my fingertips and fresh blooms surrounded me, transitioning to working from home proved to be a significant hurdle. Without a nearby supplier, I found myself in a frustrating position. My mind was constantly brimming with ideas for installations, tablescapes, and, quite frankly, I was dreaming of flowers at night.
But these ideas come with a cost. To turn a profit, I need clients, and to attract clients, I must showcase my skills. Yet, to do that, I need flowers. It’s a vicious cycle that often feels overwhelming.
To combat these creative blocks, I’ve started exploring alternative outlets. I’ve been learning how to grow flowers from seeds, which not only feeds my passion but also allows me to connect with nature in a new way. Or drawing flowers—an artistic practice that helps me visualize my designs and keeps my creativity flowing. And of course, I’ve embraced blogging as a platform to share my journey, insights, and the beauty of floristry with others.
Despite these efforts, it’s easy to fall into the mindset of “I’m failing.” When progress feels slow and resources are limited, self-doubt can creep in. In those moments, I need to remind myself of my purpose, my goals, and what I truly want to achieve. It’s essential to celebrate the wins, both big and small—like receiving my first inquiry or, more recently, presenting my first bride with her bouquet and witnessing her eyes light up with joy. That special moment happened in September, marking a significant milestone in my journey.
As I continue to navigate the challenges of running my own floral business, I’m learning to embrace both the struggles and the triumphs. Each step forward is a testament to my passion and dedication, reminding me that this journey is as beautiful as the flowers I love to create.
It’s time to stay determined and push through the tough moments while looking ahead. I’m grateful for the weddings I’ve already booked, and I plan to showcase my floral creativity in all its forms. Connecting with like-minded individuals who are also pursuing their dreams will not only help keep me accountable but will also inspire me on this journey.
